The Product
After accruing hundreds of years worth of research material, Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg has an archive of over 30,000 unique patterns and designs, including over 700 animal studies. Contemporary Dutch designer, Hella Jongerius, was invited to cull their catalog and has recombined traditional elements to make an innovative new collection. This oversized snail from 1910 has been gilded with a flourish of gold from a pattern originally designed for a dinnerware collection from 1770, and sits in a shallow porcelain dish, one in a playful series from "Nymphenburg Sketches".
As part of Jongerius’ award-winning "Nymphenburg Sketches" collection, each piece displays a series of maker’s mark, simultaneously paying homage to the history of the company and craftspeople who worked to bring the piece to your table. Each piece displays the model number, thrower’s initials, figure former’s number, designer, decor number, painter’s number (figure), painter’s number (pattern) and polisher’s initials.
The Designer
Credited as one of the driving forces behind the new arts and crafts movement, Hella Jongerius marries unconventional materials and methods with tradition techniques to create a style that has captured the attention of everyone from Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg to flat-pack giant Ikea. Her unpretentious designs reveal a sense of humor, but also a great appreciation of craftsmanship and tradition.
