The Product
With an intense countenance, this predatory Shrike is vigilant. The bird’s most defining characteristic, a delicately hooked beak, has been painstakingly recreated by the craftsmen at Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenberg. It takes Nymphenburg artists at least a decade of intense training to achieve the level of skill required to make a piece like the Shrike, one in a series of woodland birds sculpted by the porcelain house. Detailed talons, feathers and beaks give each bird in this series its own personality and bring the unfinished porcelain to life.

The Designer
Born in 1884, Theodor Kärner is regarded as one of the most accomplished animaliers in the world, and his lifelike recreations of both domesticated and wild animals are sought after by collectors. His attention to detail and an understanding of movement and form give his designs an added air of realism. While at Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg from 1905-1918 Kärner designed at least 88 animals which continue to be reproduced by the company’s talented artists today.
