The Product
The warm luster of this platinum-finished collection is a reminder of porcelain’s ambitious European beginnings. During their quest for the recipe to make gold, eighteenth century European alchemists accidentally found the formula for porcelain, and the rest is history. Because it is coated in real platinum, this handmade collection’s matte finish will not tarnish with age. Hand wash only, do not microwave.
The Designer
When we first met Stephanie Hering in Paris years ago, she was selling her beautifully handcrafted porcelain vases hoping to make an impression on a tableware market flooded with major manufacturers and mass-produced products.
Flash-forward nearly six years to Hering Berlin, one of the most respected porcelain houses to emerge from Germany in the past decade. What started with vases quickly became plates, bowls, cups – all of which still bear the hallmarks of Stephanie’s original vision: crisply stylish pieces skillfully made. Forming Hering Berlin with her husband, the architect Götz Esslinger, and ceramics specialist Wiebke Lehmann, Stephanie Hering has succeeded in making an impression.
The design process is still a homegrown process for Hering, who lives with a piece in her house at least six months before approving it for production. While most designers do the majority of their designing in the studio, Hering lets real life and everyday living influence her final design decisions, something most designers don’t have the patience for.
Working with a group of highly skilled potters, each piece from Hering is 100% handmade from start to finish. Pieces are either thrown and shaped on the potter’s wheel freehand, hand thrown over plaster forms, or slip-casted. Molds are a no-no in the Hering studio. Pieces are then either hand shellacked for a glossy finish, or bisque is delicately hand washed and smoothed for a raw finish. For their signature perforated bowls, each hole is carefully hand cut, sometimes meaning as many as 6,300 holes for a single piece.
In addition to perpetuating the handcrafted tradition of producing fine porcelain, since opening in 1999, the porcelain house has tried to help reestablish some of the traditions of porcelain making that have been lost over the years. In order to use the traditional pigment, cobalt blue, in their pieces, they devised an innovative firing technique unique to their studio. A combination of new world design and old world material and sensibility typifies Hering Berlin’s philosophy and style.
