The Line
If you can’t make it out to a Michelin-rated restaurant, you can at least dine on a Michelin-rated plate. Designer Bodo Sperlein is sought after by Europe’s famous chefs to dress their dinners in his porcelain handiwork. Playing with light and shadow, the Black Forest collection is adorned with a series of silhouetted trees against a starkly white porcelain background. Like Germany’s dark woods in wintertime, the leafless silhouettes rest quietly alone as individual pieces or reveal a forest when set together.

The Designer
German artist-designer Bodo Sperlein has been reinventing some of Europe’s most traditional companies in recent years, breathing new life into old school brands such as Swarovski and Lladro. His training as a three-dimensional designer at London’s Camberwell College of Art has opened doors for him in a variety of settings.

Working primarily in porcelain and crystal, Sperlein’s interest in the play of light and shadow is seen his light fixtures, as well as the table settings Black Forest and Golden Forest for Dibbern. His tableware has generated such interest, that the Michelin-rated chefs of Europe often seek his expertise when dressing their tables.A sort of porcelain alchemist, Sperleinis interested in the wider applications of the material, and is the only artist to experiment with a porcelain-polyurethane mixture that can be amazingly produced in paper-thin sheets.

His work continues to revitalize long-established brands, reinterpreting traditional concepts in porcelain and crystal for a new generation of stylemakers.
