The Product
Like the name Mud implies, these bowls and cups aren’t afraid to get dirty, which might be surprising when seen in person. The delicate look and feel of Mud Australia’s porcelain hides its true strength. Owner Shelley Simpson wanted her line to be lived in, so she’s made sure that they are all oven, microwave, dishwasher, and food safe (we can even give you her recipe for soft-centered chocolate pudding if you like). With a small staff working in a studio near Sydney, you can guarantee that each Mud piece has passed through several hands before being deemed good enough for your table. So take one off the shelf and don’t be afraid to get dirty.

The Designer
After a chance encounter with a potting wheel, owner and designer Shelley Simpson started Mud Australia as a “Plan B” career choice when her career as a restaurant manager hit a dead end. With no training as a ceramicist, Simpson opened her studio in 1994 and has found international success since. She continues to rely on the combined experience and inexperience of her team, some of whom have ceramics training and some who don’t, to produce the most economical designs to grace our tables.

Originally working with ceramics and earthenware, Simpson moved to using porcelain several years ago because the material minimizes imperfections and costs. Mud is always seeking out new colors and designs, and the Mud collection is constantly growing and evolving.
