The Product
The face of a nineteenth century Italian opera singer struck artist Piero Fornasetti as special as it stared out of an old magazine. He went on to draw her over 500 times during his lifetime, and his children combed through his drawings to find the perfect faces for Cole and Son’s hand-printed wallpaper. The Designer
Piero Fornasetti was a twentieth century Italian designer and artist whose Neo-classical style influenced fashion, architecture and interior design. Born in Milan in 1913, Fornasetti spent his youth challenging the status quo, getting expelled from design schools, eventually resulting in his exile from Italy for the duration of World War II.

After the war, Fornasetti returned to Milan where an auspicious relationship with designer Gio Ponti led to exposure in Domus, helping to reinforce Fornasetti’s reputation as one of Italy’s preeminent designers.

Fornasetti is most famous for the use of his muse, nineteenth century opera soprano Lina Cavalieri, whose face inspired over 500 drawings and a series of over 350 plates, each bearing a different Cavalieri countenance.
