The Product
Inspired by the austere lifestyle of Bohemian monks, architect turned designer John Pawson created this set of Spartan tableware. While designing a Cistercian monastery in Czechoslavakia, Pawson grew to appreciate the monks’ spare way of life. Where some flatware sets weigh you down with a multitude of pieces, this simple four-piece set is a return to the basics. Polished stainless steel.

The Designer
Although John Pawson’s background is originally in textiles from his years working for his family’s textile business in Yorkshire, England, it was his time spent in Japan teaching English that cemented his relationship with design and architecture. While in Japan he studied under Shiro Kuramata, one of Japan’s most prominent postwar designers, and returned to England to study at London’s Architectural Association.

Since 1981 Pawson has been operating his studio in London, taking on high-profile projects such as the Calvin Klein store in New York and the Cathay lounge in the Hong Kong International Airport. His projects consistently rely on an expert use of light and material to create crisp lines and minimal spaces.

In recent years he has spent more time designing for the home and working closely with Belgian company When Objects Work, producing bowls, serving trays, and other kitchen utensils help bring his designs into the homes of people around the world.
