Stacks of pots and round wooden drying boards in a potter’s studio were in part the inspiration for designer and architect Vincent Van Duysen’s collection of earthenware bowls for When Objects Work. Offered in a variety of understated colors, each handmade bowl has a different depth but all share the same 11 inch footprint. Weathered oak lids of varying thickness accompany each bowl, allowing the series to be easily stacked and stored, while doing double time as trivets or serving plates. Try leaving them stacked on your counter top for an instant still life.

Belgian-born Vincent Van Duysen is gaining notoriety as one of a new generation of architects and designers: the total designer. Much in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright, who was obsessive about the interiors and furnishings of the homes he designed for clients, the total designer wants to be involved in the minutiae of designing a structure. From the silverware to the exterior siding, total designers like Vincent Van Duysen’s see that a project is truly the sum of its parts.

A professionally trained architect, Van Duysen opened his firm in Antwerp in 1990 and continues to engage in a variety of projects, both commercial and domestic, that include forays into object and furniture design, helping to usher in a new era in lifestyle design.
