Manufacturer: t.e. (Thomas Eyck)

Designer: Aldo Bakker

Location: Amsterdam

Size: 3.13"d x 3.5"h

Material: Mouthblown borosilicate glass

The Product
The seamless surface and flawless profile of the blown glass make it hard to tell where the water ends and the glass begins. Microwave and dishwasher safe.

Aldo Bakker’s glass line may recall days spent in chemistry class, not only because of the unadorned, clinical lines of the tumblers and carafes of the collection, but also because it is made from borosilicate, the same material used to make laboratory beakers and test tubes. Specially designed to resist quick changes in temperature in the laboratory to avoid cracking, you can go from hot toddies to iced coffee in a flash and not worry about angrying up those molecules. Lightweight and durable, the blown glassware of this collection is scientifically sophisticated, yet right at home on any counter top.

The Designer
Working with glass professionally since age sixteen, Dutch born Aldo Bakker subsequently moved to jewelry, furniture and exhibition design before revisiting his first professional medium with this glassware collection for Thomas Eyck.

Son of design Gijs Bakker, founding father of the Dutch design company Droog, the younger Bakker began working with glass in his father’s studio in 1987. Soon after, he turned his attentions towards jewelry design at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and later at the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he’s been teaching in the Man and Well-Being Department since 2002.

He has produced a diverse body of work from his Amsterdam studio since 1994, creating furniture and tableware, while working closely with his father, designing dramatic exhibitions for Gijs Bakker’s museum shows and retrospectives.
