About the Product
So much attention is paid to perfection that it’s easy to overlook the beauty in simple flaws. With her b-set collection, Dutch designer Hella Jongerius realized that a collection’s personality lies in the differences, rather than the similarities, of each piece. Ten years after Royal Tichelaar Makkum produced her original b-set, Jongerius has emerged from her lab with a new batch of mature colors for her coveted porcelain line.

Fired in an overheated oven to create intentional imperfections, each piece in the b-set is distinctive and unique in its finish, yet retains the integrity, strength and beauty that marks all of Jongerius’ work. Each piece is imprinted with a maker’s mark noting its color and serial number beneath the glaze. Playing with pigment colored clay and experimenting with new glazes has paid off, resulting in deep red and warm gray finishes. A drastic change from the pastel hues of the original youthful set, the new b-set is an update that manages to improve upon a classic.

About the Designer
Credited as one of the driving forces behind the new arts and crafts movement, Hella Jongerius marries unconventional materials and methods with tradition techniques to create a style that has captured the attention of everyone from Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg to flat-pack giant Ikea. Her unpretentious designs reveal a sense of humor, but also a great appreciation of craftsmanship and tradition.

A graduate of Eindhoven Design Academy, the Dutch designer first found favor with the design collective Droog in 1993. Since Jongerius opened her own design studio, Jongeriuslab, in 2000, the lab has become a workshop where her obsessions with color, shape, and texture can be tested. Only a four person operation, everyone in the Rotterdam-based lab gets a chance to get their hands dirty.Their award-winning designs, including ceramics, tableware, textiles and furniture, are continually exhibited around the world.

Jongerius herself has been a guest curator at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, and enjoyed the first retrospective of her work in 2005 - a mere 12 years after her Droog debut. Her prolific body of work is defining a new era of craft and design, where the process and material is just important as the final product.

As the Netherlands oldest continually operating business, Royal Tichelaar Makkum has over 400 years of expertise and technique behind their pottery production. Although most of the company's pieces have traditionally used clay from the local region near Makkum, the b-set by Hella Jongerius marked the company's first foray into porcelain production.
