The Product
Eating lobster requires concentration, a willingness to get dirty, and the right tools. Looking like they were pulled from the tool box rather than the kitchen drawer, Pott’s lobster tongs are the tool you need to pry the most meat out of your meal. The tip has serrated teeth to get into hard to reach places, and the jaws give you the amount of leverage you need to crack into hardened shells.
The Designer
With a background in industrial design and a degree from the University of Saarbrucken, German designer Ralph Kramer got his start designing surfboards for a sporting goods firm. His attention quickly shifted to designing items for the home, and found flatware to be a specialty. In addition to designing a number of purpose-designer utensils for the German manufacturer Pott, Kramer is also a designer for Germany’s other cutlery giant, mono.
The Manufacturer
You can tell that the people at Pott love food as much as they love cutlery. With a reputation for minimalist designs and purpose-built utensils, this century old company produces seriously crafted cutlery with award-winning designs that are anything but humorless.
Founded in Germany in 1904 by Carl Hugo Pott, the brand simply known as Pott hit its stride nearly thirty years later when it was joined by Carl Hugo’s son, Carl Pott, a talented cutlery designer. Carl Pott’s devotion to the tenet’s of the Werkbund and Bauhaus movements, specifically minimalism, function and material, combined with his fixation on ergonomics helped establish Pott’s standard for quality.
Pott believes that craft cannot be computerized, and their commitment to traditional methods of production means that every utensil is still produced by hand by skilled craftsmen. To make a fork requires more than 30 production steps, a knife more than 90. Pott employees believe in their product to the point that they are willing to spend hours perfecting a place setting it would take a machine a fraction of the time to produce.
Pott continues to encourage new and inventive designers who share their love of food. Pieces like the tasting spork looks to the cooking process for design inspiration, combining food, fun and function in one simple piece. With a vast catalog of quality work, and young designers injecting new ideas and life into the brand, Pott’s original designs continue to win awards and acclaim worldwide.
