The Product
Although famous for their classically Danish porcelain and traditional designs, Royal Copenhagen isn’t afraid to color outside of the lines once in a while. Their collaboration with Ole Jensen was one such venture, resulting in his successful collection, Ole. This mug has heft and a spout-like handle that makes it the perfect thumbrest. Dishwasher and microwave safe.
The Designer
Trained at Denmark’s Arts and Crafts College and the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, Ole Jensen has been one of the most active designers in Denmark’s design community for the last 30 years. Working as a designer, educator, and advocate for public art, Jensen’s life has been entrenched in Denmark’s art scene. Despite his over-scheduled life, his work hasn’t suffered for it. His new designs are continually exhibited and internationally successful, while his home wares bring color to life’s mundane tasks.
The Manufacturer
Royal Copenhagen began porcelain production in 1775, four years before the royal family assumed control. The company produced porcelain typical of the region until 1882, when ownership left royal hands and Arnold Krog was hired as art director. It was under the direction of Krog that the Royal Copenhagen name truly made its mark.
In addition to revolutionizing the underglazing techniques that allowed the company to increase quality and production, Krog also brought a regionalism to their designs by introducing motifs inspired by the Danish landscape. Krog also encouraged designers to look outside of Denmark for inspiration, resulting in a Japanese influence seen in some of their wares.
Today, many of the Royal Copenhagen production techniques are still low-tech, relying on trained craftsmen to form, assemble and paint their porcelain pieces. Royal Copenhagen continues to produce traditional designs that appeal to contemporary audiences, as well as employ young designers to add to their eclectic catalog.
