The Product
The traditional oil lantern gets a high-polish makeover with Erik Magnussen’s ship’s lamp from Stelton. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, the clean burning oil lamp has an approximate burning time of 48 hours when filled. A glass cylinder protects the flame from wind, and a handle allows for easy hanging. Much more original than candles, and perfect for dining al fresco. Or enjoy the next black-out in style.
The Designer
Functionality is at the root of all Erik Magnussen’s designs. A trained ceramicist, the Danish-born Magnuseen has won the Danish Society of Industrial Design prize four times for his practical housewares, and was 1983’s Designer of the Year as warded by the Danish Design Council. He continues to reinvent his best-selling vacuum jug in imaginative new colors, keeping the classic design fresh.
Denmark, well-known for the seriousness with which it takes design, awarded Magnussen the Danish Design Prize in 2007 in honor the jug’s thirtieth birthday and was presented by the crowned prince himself.
The Manufacturer
Begun by the son of renowned Danish architect and designer, Arne Jacobsen, Stelton began manufacturing Jacobsen’s stainless steel designs in the 1960s. After Jacobsen’s death in 1971, the company began experimenting with new materials and designers, and today produces five signature lines under the Stelton name. Stelton designs can be found in the Museum of Modern Art, Cooper-Hewitt, and Victoria and Albert Museum, and continue to win design awards worldwide.
