The Product
Ted Muehlings designs are more than inspired by nature, they aspire to reproduce nature with realistic accuracy. For his bird's wing dish, he has sculpted a perfectly feathered span from pure bisque porcelain, with the crook making up the bowl’s cradle. Muehling’s affinity for realism means the underside of the wing is just as detailed as the facing side.

The Designer
Ted Muehling is not an artist that works with abstractions. For the past 30 years he has worked tirelessly to recreate the kind of perfection that nature produces so effortlessly. Inspired by the scattered bits of flotsam and ephemeral remnants nature leaves behind, he manipulates porcelain to mimic the slick bowl of a seashell or the dull finish of a bird’s egg.

Born in New Jersey and an alumni of the Pratt Institute, Muehling first garnered attention in the 1970s and 1980s for his romantic, nature-inspired jewellery. Gradually he gravitated towards larger decorative pieces, and opened his own New York shop in Soho in 1990. Although recent collaborations with well-established companies such as Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg have earned him wider recognition, he continues to work with a small staff out of his New York workshop that also serves as his warehouse and boutique.

The Manufacturer
Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg’s designs, techniques, and commitment manage to impress an increasingly cynical and technologically driven populous one tea cup at a time.

Located outside of Munich and operating from within the grounds of the Nymphenburg Palace, Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg has continually operated since it was established by the Bavarian Royal family in 1747. Harnessing the power from the canal, the manufactory has been operating from nothing but water power for over 250 years.

Artists of extraordinary talent, many Nymphenburg employees come from families that have been working on the palace grounds for generations. Each step of production is hands on, whether modeling, painting or polishing. The level of skill required to execute some designs goes beyond a typical apprenticeship: some pieces from the collection require artists to have upwards of 15 years experience before they attempt it.

In addition to producing traditional patterns and designs in the same style and manner they have been for centuries (none of Nymphenburg’s 30,000 designs is ever retired), the porcelain house has endeavored the talents of contemporary designers in recent years, such as Ted Muehling and Hella Jongerius, to create new lines.

With its storied history, veteran craftsmen, and reputation for unerring quality and vision, Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg continues its legacy as one of the most venerable porcelain manufacturer in the world.
